Taiwan Studies Project

Taiwan Studies Project at the University of Zurich (2017-2019; 2020-2022)

On August 23, 2017 the Chinese Studies Department of the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies (IAOS) at the University of Zurich has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for an initial two-years project, funded by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China, for sponsoring various Taiwan-related activities at IAOS.

The project has received a second round of sponsorship, which has started officially on August 1, 2020 and shall continue for another two years, until August 2022.

In charge of the project is PD Dr. Simona Grano.

Two academic events in the form of workshops/conferences will fall under the scope of this grant. Furthemore the Taiwan Studies Project shall continue to focus on: the acquisition of important databases and library resources; inviting Taiwanese lecturers and scholars to hold seminars at our institute; the continuation of the successful Zurich Taiwan Lecture Series and the screening of Film Events related to Taiwan, among others the Zurich Taiwan Film Series.

The Taiwan project aims at further deepening the offer of Taiwan-related courses taught by academic staff at the institute.
With our varied and comprehensive choice of topics, we shall continue to attract students from several departments and backgrounds, e.g. from Chinese Studies, Political Sciences and International Relations, Gender Studies and Film Studies.

Highlights of the first round of sponsorship (2017-2019):

  1. The inaugural Zurich Taiwan Lecture Series on September 12, 2017
  2. The yearly conference on the European Association of Taiwan Studies
  3. The second Taiwan Lecture Series on April 10, 2018
