Abstract

Confrontations between democratic and authoritarian alliances have intensified as Russia and China reveal their intentions to revise the current world order. China poses a bigger challenge to the democratic world than Russia, because of its capability and economic weight in the international arena. Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, China has pursued a pro-Russian neutrality and Xi Jinping has several times reiterated its intention to take Taiwan back by force, if necessary, lastly at the 20th CCP congress in mid-October.
Faced with China’s more belligerent posture in Asia, small and middle countries have found themselves caught in the middle of an intensifying US-China competition. Through the perspective of small powers in East Asia, particularly Taiwan, we revisit the threats and securities related to their survival strategies, considering that a war in the Taiwan Strait would spark an international conflict of proportions not seen since World War II.
