Abstract:

The presentation will focus on some folk and so-called ‘intermediate’ genres of Hindustānī music as emblematic of an entire sphere of Indian culture. The song texts of the genres – usually reductively labelled as ‘seasonal’ – shed insights on some fundamental social and cultural aspects of the life of north India. The peculiar language and rich imagery – expressed in a simple, immediate and yet intense style – reveal the complex variety of those music forms as an outcome of a constant and ongoing interaction between multi-layered contexts, beyond the binary categories of ‘classical/’folk’, secular/devotional and urban/rural.
