Buchprojekt (drittes Buch): Frozen Time, Fleeting Time. Tracing Temporalities at the Medieval Japanese Court

Abstract
The Japanese court that had emerged as the center of power and a primary sphere of literary and cultural sophistication in the Heian period, witnessed drastic changes with the dawn of the medieval period as political power shifted to the warrior class. To compensate for its fall from power and finding itself in a position of economic challenges, the court strove to position itself as the bearer of culture and etiquette. The court’s social and political struggles are also evident in the ways the nobility perceived and dealt with time. Investigations into symbolic representations and social regulations of time in this period of drastic change helps to understand the interrelation between power structures and aesthetic objectivations of time in medieval Japan.

Frozen Time, Fleeting Time. Tracing Temporalities at the Medieval Japanese Court is the first monograph written in English to provide a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted aspects of “time” at the Japanese court. Focusing on the textual, social, and cognitive dimensions of time, and drawing on a wide array of medieval sources written by emperors, court officials, and court ladies, as well as theories of time by Western and Japanese scholars, it is shown that a variety of time orders and logics coexisted, interacted, and sometimes clashed at the medieval Japanese court. Through examples from ceremonial and everyday life, it is demonstrated how the court aristocracy engaged with temporal aspects of social activities and natural rhythms and expressed them in their literary output. The book also explores how earlier timekeeping practices and expressions of time consciousness persisted and evolved during the medieval period. Demonstrating the relevance of various time-related practices in medieval Japan to modern Japanese and Western societies, the book further challenges culturalist views of premodern societies as being dominated by a uniform understanding of time as cyclical. As a groundbreaking study in the field, Frozen Time, Fleeting Time uncovers one of the primary realms of human experience within the social sphere of the Japanese nobility, allowing us to understand the rich and varied interplay of temporalities in this fascinating period. 

The work contributes to the disciplinary conversation of, socio-cultural and intellectual history, as well as literary studies, and is intended for specialists in Japanese studies, particularly those in the fields of medieval Japan. It will also be of interest to general readers interested in premodern Japan, notably its history and literature. Readers will leave this book with a deeper understanding of the complexities of time at the medieval Japanese court.
