Abstract

Mediality has become a major focus in research on premodern Japanese literature, though it is often limited to manuscripts and prints. Covering the entire premodern period since the earliest surviving written sources, this symposium presents an overview over the mediality of Japanese narratives from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on texts that were transmitted or performed orally, narratives in performing arts, and adaptations in the visual arts.
