Intensive Summer Courses 2015

Our summer courses have special, attractive conditions for students and are more intensive than our regular courses (two four sessions per week).
This summer we offer four different courses; all dealing with crucial topics about the Arab world. We recommend them to students having already completed a bachelor's degree. The courses are offered within our beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. Communication will take place via Skype

Summer Course 1: Beginners   Basic Course: "Following Arabic news and reports"
Lecturer: Daniel Falk, M.A.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 12:00-13:30 (CET)
17. August - 3. September 2015 (12 sessions).
Class is taught in Arabic and English.
Material: "Media Arabic" by A. Algibali and N. Korica, supplemented by the teacher with some current news items and audio and video extracts.
Level as specified by CEFR: B1, see level "beginners" here.
Summer Course 2: Intermediate   " The role of Arab women during the Arab spring and how it has developed."
Lecturer: Adel Salama, M.A.
Tuesday and Friday 17.00-18.30 CET
August 14, 18, 21, 25, 28, September 1, 4, 8 (8 sessions)
Class is taught mainly in Arabic.
Material will be provided by the teacher

Summer Course 3: Intermediate   "Refugees, migrants, and displaced persons across the Arab World"

Tuesday and Friday 17.00-18.30 CET

Class is taught mainly in Arabic.

Summer Course 4: Advanced   "Viewpoints"
Lecturer: Adel Salama, M.A.
Monday and Thursday 17:00-18:30 CET
August 13, 17, 20, 24, 27, September 3, 7, 10 (8 sessions)
Class is taught exclusively in Arabic.
Material will be provided by the teacher
Level as specified by CEFR: B2-C1, see level "advanced" here
Mode   Twice to four times a week, 90 minutes, in a small group of six to nine, online. Eight to twelve progressive lessons to a special topic. Estimated time to prepare the lessons will be at least 3 hours per session. Cancelled sessions due to an emergency on the part of the lecturer will be substituted (normally added at the end of the course).
Certificates   A certificate of participation will be issued if the student has attended at least three quarters of all meetings and if he/she has met the course requirements as defined by the lecturer at the beginning of the semester (This might include presentations in class or written exercises).
Fees   8 session course: 200 CHF for students enrolled at a university,
250 CHF for everyone else.
12 session course: 280 CHF for students enrolled at a university,
350 CHF for everyone else.
No further discounts applicable.
Fees are expected to be paid before teaching starts. If a student has to cancel his/ her participation before the first session, he/ she will be reimbursed the whole amount minus a charge of 50.- CHF. No reimbursement will be paid after the first session.

Registration is open until 1. August 2015.
Technical Issues   Students need a computer, internet access, a headset (compulsory) and a Skype account. We will check in a personal online meeting whether the connection is working. Technical problems showing up during the semester that prevent a student from attending the class are subject to his/her own responsibility. Missed classes will, therefore, not be substituted. However, if a technical problem prevents all students from participating, the class will be substituted (normally added at the end of the course).
