MA Japanese Studies Minor 30

This presentation serves as a guide. When planning your studies, please note the legal bases (in the info box at the bottom of this page).

Note: Students who began before Fall 2019 should familiarise themselves with the pertinent transition rules.

Admission requirements

You can find information about the general admission requirements here. For subject-specific admission please refer to the  “Legal basis Master's in Japanese Studies Minor 30” section in the document “Appendix to Study Regulations” (Anhang zur Studienordnung) at the Infobox at the bottom of the page.

Passing requirements

To pass the Master's minor programme in Japanese Studies, at least 30 ECTS credits from the programme must be completed, and at least 50% of which must be graded (no fail/pass modules)
Available module selections are detailed in the groups below.

Module group: Academic Japanese

Passing requirements: at least 6 ECTS credits.

Core Elective Modules:

  • Japanese Scientific Writing (exercise), 3 ECTS credits, graded, offered every Fall.
  • Japanese Scientific Presentation (exercise), 3 ECTS credits, pass/fail, offered every Spring.
  • Kanbun/Kundoku (lecture/exercise), 3 ECTS credits, graded, offered every Spring.

Module group: Japanese Philology

Passing requirements: at least 9 ECTS credits; free choice among all core elective (CE) and elective (E) modules in this module group.

CE-Modules 

  • Japanese Source Texts: Translation and Commentation (exercise), 3 ECTS credits, graded, offered every 2nd Fall.
  • Japanese Source Texts: Cursory Reading (exercise), 3 ECTS credits, pass/fail, offered every Spring.
  • Research topics in Japanese philology (seminar paper), 3 ECTS credits, graded, offered every semester.

E-Modules:

  • Research seminars on changing topics (seminar), 6 ECTS credits, graded, offered irregularly (usually every semester).

Module Group: Social Science Analysis of Japan

Passing requirements: at least 9 ECTS credits; free choice among all core elective (CE) and elective (E) modules in this module group.

CE-Modules:

  • Social Science Concepts and Theories of Japan (lecture/exercise), 6 ECTS credits, graded, offered every Fall.
  • Lecture of Japanese Research Publications (exercise), 6 ECTS credits, graded, offered every Spring.
  • Introduction to Research Methods (in Social Sciences) (exercise), 3 ECTS credits, pass/fail, offered every Spring.
  • Issues in Social Science of Japan (seminar paper), 3 ECTS credits, graded, offered every semester.

E-Modules:

  • Research seminars on changing topics, 6 ECTS credits, graded, offered irregularly (usually every semester).

Module Group: Current Research Debates

Passing requirements: none.

Choose freely from the core elective- (CE) and elective (E) modules on offer in order to fill a possible difference to a total of 30 ECTS Credits.
 

CE-Module:

•    Asia and the Middle East in Current Debates (exercise), 6 ECTS Credits, graded, offered every Spring.

In addition, unregularly offered elective modules are on offer. Please consult the online Course catalogue.

Finally, students can opt for at least 6 more ECTS credits from any section of the program.
