Eurasian linguistic, material, and cultural contact, loan words/phonetic borrowings from Indian languages; Han dynastic manuscripts; early Buddhist texts and their translation; medical texts
Within the frame of the SNF project “Sino-Indo-Iranica rediviva – Early Eurasian migratory terms in Chinese and their cultural implications” I am responsible for investigating possible Indian backgrounds of loan words in ancient and medieval Chinese manuscripts and transmitted texts.
My personal project “Made in the western regions or beyond? Foreign products as reflected in Indian loan words found in excavated and transmitted texts from the Han-Dynasty” focusses on pre-Buddhist phonetic borrowings and other loans in the Chinese language as they can be found in the Han dynastic manuscripts from the North-western border region.
