Content

Sino-Marxism, from Li Dazhao to Li Zehou, cannot simply be reduced to a theoretical or ideological import (“Marxism in China”). In terms of its philosophical choices, it has always been a creative adaptation and translation of the Marxist conceptions and categories rooted in premodern Chinese thought. This lecture explores these classical roots (in the sense of 本 ben), focusing on three aspects: (1) tradition of political populism; (2) attempts at historical materialism; and (3) classical correlative dialectics. It will particularly focus on the conceptualizations of those three ideas proposed by Jia Yi, Li Gou, and Wang Fuzhi as well as their possible influence upon the development of the Sino-Marxist philosophy.

Dawid Rogacz is Assistant Professor at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. He is the author of the monograph Chinese Philosophy of History: From Ancient Confucianism to the End of the Eighteenth Century (Bloomsbury 2020) and over a dozen peer-reviewed papers. He is currently co-editing a three-volume set Chinese Philosophy and Its Thinkers: From Ancient Times to the Present Days. His research interests include Chinese philosophy, the philosophy of history, and the philosophy of religion.
