China's Xinjiang Policies: Counterterrorism or (Cultural) Genocide?

Lecturer

Prof. Dr. Björn Alpermann (Julius-Maximilians-Universität, Würzburg)

Date and Time

March 10, 2022, 6 - 8 pm Uhr

Abstract

Since 2017 China stands accused of large-scale human rights abuses targeting Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in its Northwestern Xinjiang region. These include the extra-legal detention of hundreds of thousands in “re-education centers”, coercive labor, forced sterilizations, the building up of a veritable police state and other measures that some critics sum up as genocide and crimes against humanity. China’s government, on the other hand, defends its Xinjiang policies as necessary measures of “counterterrorism” and fighting Islamic extremism. This talk discusses the accusations as well as the background and official justification of Chinese Xinjiang policies.
