  • 1994-2001: studied Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies (major), Medieval and Modern History, History of Eastern Europe (minors) at Kiel University (Germany)
  • main subjects: history and philology of the Middle East
  • source languages: modern and classical Arabic, Persian, modern and Ottoman Turkish
  • extensive research in Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Libya
  • 2001-2005: Ph. D. student in the junior research group "Islamic networks of education in local and transnational contexts, 18th-20th centuries" (Bochum University, funded by Volkswagen foundation)
  • 2005-2011 junior teaching and research assistent (Assistent) at the department of Oriental Studies at Zürich University
